CALL Scotland Info Cards

Posted by Allan Wilson on the 4th July, 2016

Info Cards are new resources available from the Downloads section of the CALL Scotland web site. They are designed to be printed double-sided onto a sheet of A4 card, then cut in half to produce 2 A5 cards, with information needed to perform a simple task with a piece of technology.

The first two cards provide a basic introduction to the iPad / iPhone's Speak Selection / Speak Screen options and to the Siri speech recognition facility on the same devices. The cards arose from frequent conversations at events for parents or teachers where people would come up to me and ask for advice on "the best iPad apps for someone with dyslexia". My typical response would be to ask if they knew about the iPad's built-in features such as Speak Selection and Siri. Hardly anybody knew about Speak Selection, while roughly half knew about

Siri, but only for asking questions, rather than as a writing tool. I would then demonstrate the features, and how to activate them, but realised I needed brief written instructions for people to use when they went home - hence the cards.

Of course, there are lots of other features built into the iPad that can be used to support people with dyslexia and other reading and writing difficulties - see our poster on Using the iPad to Support Dyslexia.

These are the first in a series of CALL Info Cards. More will be added in due course.
