We're looking for students to take part in research

Posted by Paul Nisbet on the 27th February, 2018

We have been asked to participate in an international research project looking at the accessibility of the PISA online assessments. We are looking for ten students in Scotland aged 15, who use Assistive Technology, to evaluate an online PISA science assessment, and tell us what they think. If you are a student who uses Assistive Technology, or if you work with or know a student who might be interested, can you contact us?

PISA

PISA is the major international study of pupil performance in which Scotland participates. PISA assesses the performance of 15-year-old pupils in maths, reading and science. The programme runs every three years and you can read about Scotland's results on the Scottish Government web site.

Online accessible assessments

The PISA assessments are delivered online, and the aim of this project is to investigate how accessible new versions of the assessments are, for learners with additional support needs. We have been asked to find ten students who use Assistive Technology, work through a sample assessment with them, and interview them about the experience.

Participants

We are looking for ten 15 or 16 year old students who use different types of Assistive Technology. The students should be studying science (physics) at National 4/5 level so that they have appropriate knowledge and understanding of the PISA assessments. We have been asked to find:

What's involved?

We will come to your school and work through a sample PISA science assessment with you. This will take about 90 minutes. We would like to work with the student and also a member of staff who supports the student and their technology. We are looking to make these visits in March and April 2018.

Please get in touch!

This is a great opportunity to participate in interesting research and to influence the development of assessments that were used by more than half a million young people across the globe in 2015. Participating may also benefit students and staff directly, because you may learn useful skills for accessing online resources.

If you are interested, please email Paul.Nisbet@ed.ac.uk or call 0131 651 6072.
