The Family Fun Technology Day on Saturday 16th April provides an opportunity for the families of children with additional support needs to find out more about how various forms of technology can help, particularly with regard to communication.

The event is held at CALL Scotland, Moray House School of Education in Edinburgh and run by specialist staff from the various communication aid centres in different parts of Scotland - CALL Scotland, SCTCI, FAACT, KEYCOMM, TASSCC - with help from other organisations on the day. The day is funded by the Augmentative Communication in Practice: Scotland network.

What's it all about?

Parents will have a chance to see and try some of the latest technology to find out if it will help their children:

  • Eye Gaze - control a computer with your eyes and use it for communication or playing games.
  • Electronic Communication Aids - lots of different devices will be available to try.
  • Smart Wheelchair rides - drive a wheelchair round an obstacle course just by pressing a switch.
  • Electronic toys - use switches and infra-red controllers to activate various toys.
  • iPads and tablets - find out about some of the apps that may help your child - and how they can access them.
  • Try free and low-cost computer software demonstrated by Pass IT On.
  • Use technology to make music.
  • ... and lots more!

Have fun!

It wouldn't be called a 'Family Fun Day' without opportunities for children to enjoy themselves! We have lots of fun activities lined up:

What else?

We provide a free sandwich lunch and other refreshments are available throughout the day. If your child has special dietary requirements, it may be best if you provide your own.

The day isn't just for children with additional support needs, their brothers and sisters are welcome to come along and enjoy the day, too.

Many people find that the chance to talk to communication and technology specialists from across Scotland, and the chance to share experiences with other parents in a similar situation, are particularly useful aspects of the day.

What people thought about previous days

We loved the FAACT Team stall - they were very enthusiastic and provided tonnes of ideas for early years communication through singing and play.

I liked the wide variety of activities for both my children and the opportunity to speak to other parents.

It was good to be advised of the correct apps and programs for my son to use and for him to be shown how to use them.
