Get Creative and Celebrate World Book Day

Posted by Claire Harrison on the 28th February, 2017

Can you believe the 2nd of March 2017 will mark the 20th year of World Book Day? Since 1997 children from all over the world have come together to celebrate this festival of reading and all things book related.

This year, why don’t you enable your learners to become the authors and create their own stories using digital technologies?

Here at CALL, we really like the Book Creator app,  available for iOS, Android and Windows devices. It’s very simple to use and you can create your own books which can be read as ePubs on your devices.

You can type, use your finger to draw and write, record your own narrations, insert photo and videos from your device or the web.

For the budding graphic novelists in your class there is even the option of a ‘Comic Book’ style publication complete with speech and thought bubbles, ‘Pow/Wow’, etc. sticker exclamations and various panel layout options.

CALL Scotland have produced a poster to give you tips, hints and ideas for getting started with the Book Creator App which is available to download from our website.

Don’t forget we’ve also got lots of symbolised and accessible reading resources which were created for the Scottish Book Bug Awards. So, from Powerpoint recorded and switch enable narrations to big Mack labels and Go Talk grids, everyone in class can join in the fun with ‘Bear on my Chair’, ‘Hare and Tortoise’ and this years’ winner ‘Shark in the Park on a Windy Day’.

All the Book Bug resources including teacher packs are available to download from our Books for All website.

Happy Reading, Creating and Celebrating!
