This course looks at a variety of tools and techniques that can be used to support learners with dyslexia and other reading and/or writing difficulties. The main focus of the course is on software for Windows-based PCs, but there are also references to iPads, tablets and other technology. 

It can be offered with a focus on how technology can be used to support dyslexic pupils in either primary schools, or in secondary schools.

What you'll learn on the training course

  • Definitions of dyslexia and dyscalculia.
  • How to identify pupils with reading, writing and numeracy difficulties.
  • Use of software and portable tools to support basic literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Use of standard software to support reading.
  • How to reduce visual stress.
  • Use of text to speech software.
  • Accessing electronic textbooks.
  • Using specialist software, including word banking, word prediction, contextual spellcheckers, mindmapping and speech recognition to support writing.
  • Use of iPads, tablets and Google / Google Chrome apps to support literacy.
