Saltersgate students work at CALL

Three senior students, James, Charlie and Daryll, from Saltersgate School in Midlothian have just completed three days of Work Experience with us here at CALL Scotland. We were delighted to be able to offer them this opportunity to be part of our team, to undertake some work tasks and to produce some items which are now being sold in our online shop.

The boys worked on making  Symbols For All Fobs which required precision skills using the guillotine, organisation of piles of laminated symbols then accurately attaching these cards to a retractable wheel on the lanyard.  They did such a good job!

These popular fobs consist of laminated positive behaviour supports using Picture Communication Symbols (PCS) created with Boardmaker software on a 'Symbols for All CALL Scotland' lanyard.  The symbolised words/phrases are: 'gentle hands', 'good sharing', 'walking feet', 'indoor voice', 'good looking', 'good listening', 'good sitting', 'quiet', 'wait', 'well done'.

You can create them yourself by printing of the symbols from our Symbols for All website but why not save time and  buy them from our online shop? They are a bargain at £3.50 (includes VAT and postage)

The National Improvement Hub has a practice exemplar which is designed to be useful for practitioners involved in the planning, implementation and evaluation of the Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) agenda. It showcases Sanderson High School for learners with additional support needs in South Lanarkshire who have taken a whole school approach to DYW by offering a variety of career related and work-based learning opportunities that aim to inspire the exploration of future pathways.

Parkhill Secondary School in Glasgow has created an Enterprise Academy to support young people with additional support needs into positive and sustained destinations.  Classes started at this Academy in August 2017 and focus on three key areas (Hospitality, Horticulture, Customer Services and Administration) where there is evidence of employment routes for these young people.
