Updated Wheel of Apps for Learners with Complex Needs

Posted by Claire Harrison on the 29th April, 2020

With the first edition of our App Wheel for Learners with Complex Needs first being published over a year ago, it’s now had its first refresh and update.

The Complex Needs Wheel of Apps is in no way comprehensive, there just wouldn’t be a wheel big enough! What we’ve tried to do is list the apps which we’ve found to be particularly useful for supporting the learners and schools we work with. In the same way, the apps are categorised according to skills and topics which we think can be usefully supported using apps.

How is it organised?

As before, apps which have been designed to use with a switch have a red border around the app icon. And apps which are particularly suitable for learners with Cerebral Visual Impairments (CVI) have a blue border. One of the most common pieces of feedback we hear  is ‘How do I know which apps are free?’. If you are looking at the app wheel on a PC, you can click on any of the app icons and you will be directed to app on the UK app store. The app store page shows you the cost as well as a little more information about the app. However, we know that lots of people use a printed copy of the wheel, so clicking on the icon isn’t an option. To help people more easily identify free apps on a  printed copy of the wheel, we’ve added an ‘*’ after the label under each icon. Hopefully this will make it easier to distinguish between free and paid for apps.

What’s New?

Apps which have been added to this version of the wheel include the brilliant ‘EDA PLAY TOBY’, a Cause & Effect app, which has  been designed with CVI learners in mind. We’ve also added:

 Early Learning: Sensory Shapes

Stop Go!

Brushes Redux

Smooth Talker

iSpeak Button

Choice Board Creator

You can find out more about ‘Choice Board Creator’ by watching the latest CALL webinar. We’ll also be blogging about ideas for using some of the other apps on the wheel over the next couple of weeks, so watch this space!
