Additional Support for Learning and Technology Conference

Posted by Allan Wilson on the 19th June, 2017

Over 250 people attended this year's two-day ASL and Technology Conference and Exhibition, held in Edinburgh last Wednesday and in Clydebank the following day. There were 28 companies and organisations with stands in the exhibition areas in Edinburgh, while, due to restrictions in space, there were only 21 exhibitors in Clydebank.

Throughout each day there was a programme of 30 minute presentations by suppliers, teachers (sometimes with pupils) and experts illustrating different ways in which technology and specialist software can be used to support learners with additional support needs. Feedback on the presentations was very positive.

An excellent day and really enjoyed the presentations and hand-on experiences of seeing how children can access the curriculum.

The invited presentations by Natalie Burgess on Learning Tools and other productivity tools were particularly popular, both in the evaluation forms completed on each day, and in feedback via Twitter. Presentations by staff from Langlands School, Hazel Lynch, Debbie Jans, Catherine McMillan, Imogen Wooton, Elaine Jamieson and Nadia Kettles were all well-received.

Thank you so much. A thoroughly helpful and essential day for all in the sector.

It is always interesting to see presentations involving the young people who actually use technology in their learning. Fiona Scott described how she uses speech recognition software at school, and now at university, while Julie Lindsay and pupils from Ross High School described some of their work with iPads. Sharon Maguire's pupils from Our Lady's High School, Motherwell demonstrated their use of speech recognition software.

The whole day has been fantastic, so impressed with the range of information.

There were a number of presentations from CALL staff over the two days:

Really good range of presentations and workshops. This is such a valuable day - it highlights and celebrates the importance of digital and assistive technologies.

Each day finished with a free prize draw, with over £1,000 worth of prizes kindly donated by exhibitors. It was noticeable that most teachers were being very conscientious in trying to choose prizes that would be most useful for their school!

We are grateful to all of the exhibitors, presenters and other participants who helped to make each of the days a memorable experience for all who attended.
