Presenter(s): Simeon Newbatt, MakerSpace, University of Edinburgh

This webinar will provide educators with practical guidance on using 3D printing to support children with complex learning and communication needs. Simeon will focus on how to use 3D printers to create tailored educational tools and resources that enhance engagement and accessibility for all learners.

Educators will be given an overview of how to design and print tactile learning aids, from custom manipulatives that build fine motor skills to visual aids that simplify complex concepts. Simeon will look at how to use basic design software to create objects that support sensory needs, enhance communication, and foster independence, allowing teachers to customize learning materials to each child’s specific requirements.

Additionally, he’ll discuss tips on setting up and maintaining a 3D printer in a school setting, including troubleshooting common issues and finding free design resources online. By the end of the session, educators will be equipped with the skills and confidence to incorporate 3D printing into their classrooms, making learning more accessible, interactive, and effective for students with diverse needs.
