Online Learning opportunity for parents

Posted by Shirley Lawson on the 18th August, 2022

During lockdown we were inundated with phone calls and emails from parents and family members who were trying to support young people with Additional Support Needs to access their education online.

'My son needs me to read out a whole web page and then when I ask him questions about it, he has not retained any of the information.  Is there a way his computer can read out the words automatically?'

'My daughter has a Pupil Support Assistant at school to help her access the curriculum and I know she uses some apps on the iPad but I don’t really know how she uses technology, but I know it helps her’.

On the back of signposting parents and family members to all our website resources, doing demonstrations online of assistive software and apps, discussing the merits of using technology in Teams meetings we decided to design one of our Professional Learning courses specifically for parents.

It's on Thursday, 8th September 2022 from 4:00 – 5:30pm.

Supporting your child's learning at home using technology

In this course I will be looking at a wide range of assistive built in features of iPads, laptops and Chromebooks as well as literacy support software and apps.  The goal is to share our expertise with you to allow you to better support your children.  Although the course is aimed at parents and family members it will be absolutely ideal for teachers and Pupil Support Assistants too.  And students embarking on their first teaching placements or Newly Qualified Teachers who are arriving in schools which have so much technology ready to be used and so many pupils with Additional Support Needs that could be helped.

Sign up today!  It’s going to be a great start to the term for us all:  the CALL Scotland team, parents, teachers and pupils, all working together.

Online course - £30
