CALL Scotland have created a set of symbolised print and interactive resources for learning accross the curriculum. The resources are all made using Picture Communication Symbols (PCS) and are freely accessible to any schools using Boardmaker Software.

Using picture symbols as visual supports can benefit learners of all abilities, for developing language and learning, and for organising the environment. Their use can improve outcomes for and raise the attainment of many learners, beyond those with identified additional support needs. The purpose in creating this pack is to provide a core resource for schools, which can be added to and which supports the introduction symbols and their use in everyday school activities.

The resources have been  created and organised around Curriculum for Excellence and have been organised into the  8 curricular areas:

  • Languages (including Literacy)
  • Mathematics
  • Health & Wellbeing
  • Expressive Arts
  • Religious & Moral Education
  • Social Studies
  • Sciences
  • Technologies

Each of the symbol resources has been categorised and labelled into curricular areas, through there are some resources which may fall into multiple categories. The curricular resources are in a variety of easily adaptable formats such as bingo games, domino games, matching tasks, core vocabulary boards, sequencing supports, plus many more.

Who would use these resources?

The resources can be used by Class teachers, Support for Learning teachers,

  • Classroom assistants, Additional Support Needs assistants
  • Teaching staff
  • Anyone else working with a learner with an Additional Support Need (visiting specialist staff, health professionals including Speech and Language Therapists)
  • Parent/ Carers

Why would you use the resources?

Using the resources will help make your School/Nursery a more inclusive and accessible environment for all learners. This will help learners with a range of needs to achieve, which might include

  • reduced attention span
  • difficulties following instructions and directions
  • slow processing speed
  • short working memory (particularly auditory memory)
  • delayed language (understanding and producing speech sounds/language)
  • English as a second language
  • difficulties with predictability and following change
  • difficulties reading text

These needs may be due to a range of needs including physical, visual, literacy, dyslexia and communication difficulties.

Implementing use of the resources will provide a consistent approach for all learners and for staff, as pupils progress through school and stages, and support the learner to develop skills in the above areas.
