Chromebooks are now used by pupils in local authorities across Scotland. The latest updated version of our popular Chromebook wheel of apps to support dyslexia contains a mix of Apps, extensions and web site resources.
New to the updated wheel of apps is Artificial Intelligence (AI) which is increasingly part of the Chromebook OS and other apps and extensions. Web based resources, such as Doorway Online Text Type, Talk Type, Google Lens, Inspiration RD etc, have also been included.
The poster has a useful colour coded 'key' to highlight and differentiate those extensions and apps that are free or are available within the browser (Reading Mode) or part of the Chromebook's operating system.
We carefully selected this set of apps based on a combination of factors. Many of the apps featured have a strong track record and come from well-established, trusted suppliers.
In addition, we have received positive feedback from teachers, learners and others who, highlight their effectiveness, ease of use and accessibility .
But most importantly, the apps are specifically designed to support learners with dyslexia, offering features that help with reading, writing, note taking, planning, organisation, that can help promote confidence.
The wheel also highlights Accessibility Tools which are integral to the Chromebook, such as Select to Speak and Reading Mode.
To aid navigation the wheel is divided into 6 categories;
In some cases there is duplication, for example, where one app or extension supports both reading and writing, e.g., Helperbird, ClaroRead Chrome.
