Our iPad App wheel for users with complex learning needs has received an update. There are some apps that have carried over from the old wheel as well as many new apps to consider. The wheel has been categorised as best we can but there are some apps that would fit in a few different sections. We have included a few apps with AAC built in, but a more comprehensive list can be found in our AAC App Wheel.

The wheel contains apps that can engage pupils with complex sensory processing disorders, as well as apps to improve emergent literacy and numeracy skills. Many of the apps include an element of fun/play to encourage engagement, but each app has a specific purpose and provides opportunities for learning and teaching. Some apps such as Writing Wizard or Moose Math have clear links to education, but even the more sensory activities such as Fluid Simulation or Gravitarium can begin to bridge the gaps in a learner’s understanding about cause and effect and how they can make different things happen depending on how they interact with the screen. Teaching a learner with complex ASN that they are controlling an output is a vital step towards communication, play and interaction.

The key at the top left-hand side of the wheel gives details about access methods such as switch use, but now also considers the inbuilt ability of iPads to track head and eye movements as an interaction method.  There is also information about what apps are free or have free trials.

What’s new.

Plus, many more!

Download the App wheel here.

The electronic version of the wheel has active links that will take you to the iTunes app store where you can find out more information about each app and then download them onto your iPad.
