Technology can help raise attainment for learners with dyslexia

Posted by Shirley Lawson on the 21st August, 2019

A recent article in the Scotsman newspaper told the story of 16 year old Callum Glasgow, a dyslexic pupil at Royal High, achieving five grade As in his Higher exams. How did he manage to do all his school work, revision and interim assessments while experiencing reading and writing difficulties?

Pauline Walker, headteacher at Royal High, says,

At our school all of our work is online and accessible through a one-to-one iPad project and the iPads have accessibility modes. They have made sure that young people can remove that barrier all together and get on with learning.

CALL Scotland provide a range of Professional Learning opportunities to help teachers learn how to use technology to support reading, writing, spelling and organisational difficulties. Whether it's iPads, Chromebooks, Windows laptops or a combination of all these devices, we can deliver training which will focus on showing you what is possible with technology to help learners with dyslexia to become more independent and confident and to produce work which reflects their cognitive ability.

Here is an example of 11 year old dyslexic pupil writing about a trip to the zoo.

I went to the zoo. It was fun.

Same boy, same task, this time using speech recognition technology.

I went to Edinburgh zoo with my friends and it was brilliant fun watching the huge hippopotamus splashing around in the mud puddle.

Using Speech recognition software or an app is just one example of how technology can make writing and spelling much easier for someone with dyslexia thus creating new possibilities for learning and attainment.
