Technology Discovery Day Success!

Posted by Joanna Courtney on the 28th June, 2017

The Technology Discovery Day organised by Augmentative Communication in Practise Scotland (ACiP:S) and held at CALL Scotland on Saturday 24th June 2017 was a great success. Thank you to everyone who helped organise the event and to those who came along on the day.

Adults (16+) who use AAC, from across Scotland, came along to take part in the morning’s wide range of  activities, including accessible arts and crafts, trying out new communication aids, having fun being pictured  with celebrities in the green screen Photo-booth and participating in live music sessions with the fantastic  Das Contrasboth with percussion instruments and using digital technologies e..g DJ loops on Garageband  app.

The afternoon’s Consultation lead by Communication  Matters gathered views from the participants on what an  ideal AAC  service would look like, enabled voting on a  'Communication  Access symbol' for the UK and discussed views  on regional accents for communication aids, in particular the  need for Scottish voices to be â€‹available on all communication aid platforms; Windows, Android and iOS.

Everybody agreed that a ‘choice of voice’ is so very   important when it comes to selecting a communication aid and we certainly agree! We  were happy that Julie Carr and Jean Alexander from the Assisted Communications Team at  the Scottish Government were present at the consultation to take on board the views of  people who use AAC when planning guidance on future service provision.
