Using chromebooks in examinations

Posted by Shirley Lawson on the 16th January, 2018

FREE Seminar: Chromebooks in Examinations, 07 March 2018 (10:00 - 1:00pm), University of Edinburgh.

CALL Scotland are working with the SQA to research the potential use of Chromebooks with digital exam papers.  Many local authorities in Scotland are using G Suite Education (previously knowns as Google Apps for Education) to help achieve their goals for digital learning and teaching.  Louise Jones, Scotland Lead, Google for Education, says...

It is anticipated in 2018 the numbers of local authorities using G Suite Education will grow with the announcement that Glow will now include G Suite Education apps.

There has been a significant increase in the purchase of Chromebooks for schools in Scotland. The devices are essentially a Google Chrome Browser in a highly portable laptop style device. They are a cost effective, efficient,  versatile solution to historically slow running Windows PC laptops and netbooks.

Many students who use digital exam papers have additional support needs and use the assistive features a computer can offer to help them complete the exam independently.  Yes, it would be possible to  set up Chromebooks for exams using the  'Kiosk Mode' which allows settings to be applied to the device via a Management console but will the device provide the support that learners with additional support needs require?

In this half day seminar, CALL Scotland will showcase our research and provide practical guidance and advice for schools.
