Choosing and Using Text-based AAC Communication Apps on iPad

This online learning workshop is aimed at staff supporting people with communication difficulties who wish to use text-based communication apps. By viewing the different features of the apps, the aim is to aid selection of the most suitable for a young person or adult with literacy skills. We will explore apps that are available for iPad and included in the CALL Scotland 'Wheel of AAC Apps'. From low cost apps with basic features to higher cost fully featured apps, it will include demonstration of word/phrase banking, word prediction, layout and appearance options, different voices, and alternative access including different keyboard options. There will be time for discussing and comparing apps, as well as sharing of useful tools and related resources.

Meet your presenter(s)

Gillian McNeill
Specialist Speech and Language Therapist

Gillian’s specialism is in Augmentative and Alternative Communication, drawn from 25 years working within a regional AAC team in Fife, before joining CALL Scotland in 2011. Through this she has built experience from developing a multi-agency AAC partnership, carrying out assessments, implementing support services, delivering training and contributing to AAC projects. Having worked with people with complex communication support needs of all ages - children and adults - her key area of interest presently, is supporting pupils to access learning and communication, through technology.

About the event

  • Duration: 90 minutes, starting at 4:00pm
  • Equipment requirements: Mac or Windows PC (or laptop), internet connection, microphone optional.
  • Logging into the webinar room: Read 'Preparing for an Online Workshop' and ensure you have tested the webinar link before the day.
  • Format of the Online Learning: You will hear our presenters discussing and demonstrating assistive software and apps. There will be opportunities to ask questions using your microphone or typing into a Message box. There will be 'breakout rooms' which you will be split up into (we will do that for you from our side) and it gives the opportunity to have a more active learning experience and the chance to have smaller group discussions.
