Supporting your child's learning at home using technology

1

8th September, 2022 (4:00pm - 5:30pm)

£40 per individual.

90 minute Online Learning workshop.

This new online learning course is designed for parents and family members who want to understand more about how technology can support their child's learning. There are so many devices in the hands of children and young people and yet it is not always well known what built in features or which software, apps or extensions could support their learning.

In this workshop, Shirley will run through the basics of what assistive features are built in to the devices that are commonly used in Scottish schools: iPads, Chromebooks and Windows laptops. She will show what is available and how they can be used in a curricular context and how you can support your child to use them for homework and revision.

We will primarily look at assistive technologies to support literacy difficulties but will also touch on features to support autistic children and those with visual impairment. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn first hand about technologies that can help your child work more independently and to boost their self esteem if they have been struggling in class.

What you will learn

  • To learn how your device can read text out loud
  • To learn how to speak into your device and the words appear as text
  • To explore tools for spellchecking
  • To use built in features to clear web clutter and provide line focus
  • To consider the use of word prediction to support spelling difficulties
  • To learn how the use of a OneNote Digital jotter can support organisational skills
  • To understand how technologies are being used in schools and the limitations that may exist
