How to use technology in examinations and assessments for pupils with ASN

90 minute Online Learning workshop

Pupils with Additional Support Needs may require the use of Assistive Technologies to help them fully access the curriculum and to work more independently. If they are using these tools on a daily basis then they will also need to use them in examinations and assessments.

In this course, Paul and Shirley will discuss the needs of pupils in high schools, each with different challenges that impacts their learning. We will look at the technologies that are in place for them at school and also other devices that may be used at home such as tablets and phones. There will be live demonstrations on Windows laptops, iPads and Chromebook of literacy support software, apps and extensions to support reading, writing, spelling and organisational difficulties. We will look at examination papers and answer booklets in Word and pdf formats and look at what technology tools are within the SQA guidelines as part of the Assessment Arrangements.

Meet your presenter(s)

Paul Nisbet
Engineer and Educational Technologist

Paul is a Senior Research Fellow and has an engineering background. He's involved in CALL's assessment and support service for pupils, with a particular responsibility for access technology for pupils with physical disabilities; and for technology to enable students with dyslexia or literacy difficulties access the curriculum.

Shirley Lawson
Assistive Technology and ASN Teacher

I bring my teaching experience into my role at CALL as an Assistive Technologies and Additional Support Needs teacher. I lead the CALL Scotland Professional Learning and am focusing on providing a programme of relevant, quality assistive technology training to those working with children and young people with additional support needs and / or disabilities.
