Professional Learning in Your Workplace

CALL Scotland is a registered provider of Career Long Professional Learning for inclusive digital technologies. Our training is aimed at all staff working with pupils with Additional Support Needs.

Our specialist trainers bring a tailor-made service to your school/college. You can book a 2 hour, half day or full day hands on course which will be designed to give you the skills you need to fully support your pupils access the curriculum using a range of inclusive technologies. Our training staff are knowledgeable, experienced and will create a relaxed and friendly learning environment.

Our main priority is to provide training that is relevant to your needs. Please contact kirsteen.steven@ed.ac.uk to discuss and design a bespoke course for you and your staff focussing on the desired learning outcome and then thinking about the use of technology to raise attainment. We can provide a set of Windows laptops and iPads or your own equipment can be used provided the appropriate software / apps are installed.

What are the needs of your learners?

We can design a bespoke 2 hour, half day or full day course for your staff on the use of technologies to support learners with autism. We can cover a wide variety of topics or spend time focussing on one particular area. Let's focus on the desired learning outcome and then think how technology could be implemented.

We have a bank of training iPads and Windows laptops but can also use your equipment if they have the necessary apps and software.

Autism Spectrum Conditions

We can create a training session which will look at technologies (and strategies) to support your autistic learners in any of these areas:

  • Social communication and interaction.
  • Literacy support.
  • Language development.
  • Increasing engagement.
  • Managing change.
  • Developing relationships and communication skills.

This could include hands on practice with iPads looking at the in-built accessibility features or specific apps to support communication, literacy and social interaction.

Communication Support Needs

Our specialist Speech and Language Therapists can create a training session which will look at Alternative Augmentative Communication technologies (and strategies) to support your learners in any of these areas:

This could include hands on practice with symbol or text based communication iPad apps, literacy software and apps with voice output, single and multi-message devices or exploring Eye Gaze technology for learners with a physical and communication impairment.

Dyslexia/Dyscalculia

Good use of technology can enable a pupil with dyslexia/ dyscalculia to become a successful, independent learner. There are so many features in-built in devices to support the key areas of difficulty:

  • Reading.
  • Writing.
  • Numeracy.
  • Spelling and grammar.
  • Organisation.
  • Visual Stress.

We can provide a training course which will give you hands on practice on the in-built accessibility features of iPads or Windows devices as well as highlighting the best literacy/numeracy support apps and software.

The session will include advice and support on how to implement:

  • Text to speech: to have text read out loud from the screen.
  • Speech recognition: to speak and have the words appear.
  • Audio notes: to save writing or typing.
  • Digital Learning notebooks: using OneNote to create a resource which can be accessed at home and at school/college.
  • Word prediction, word banks, writing frameworks.
  • Spelling and grammar checking features.

Physical Support Needs

For some of us, technology makes life easier or more convenient, but for people with physical challenges, technology may offer the only way to independently access learning, information, employment, to communicate, to control the physical environment, and to be independently mobile.

We can provide a training course which will give you hands on practice on how technology can be implemented to support learners with physical support needs.

Severe and Complex Support Needs

Technology has the potential to reduce or eliminate barriers to learning, offering solutions through alternative access with switches, touch screens and eye gaze. We can provide practical hands on training courses which will equip you with knowledge and skills to create a meaningful and engaging environment for learners with complex needs. The following areas can be explored:

  • How to develop cause & effect skills via switch, touch and eye gaze.
  • Frameworks and assessments to support learning and teaching.
  • Software and apps to create inclusive digital learning and teaching materials, including iPads.
  • Moving beyond cause & effect via switch, touch eye gaze.
  • How to create accessible curriculum materials with symbol software.
  • Ways technology can support communication, choice making and independence.
