We are delighted to share that Paul Nisbet, former Director of CALL Scotland, who retired last Summer, has been awarded a CBE in the King's Birthday Honours, 2026.
Paul Nisbet, who retired last year after working at the University for 42 years, latterly as Director of CALL Scotland, has been recognised for his Service to Education and his work developing assistive technology at the University.
Leading Lights Celebrated in King's Birthday Honours

As many of you will know, Paul's innovative work at CALL Scotland since it started back in 1983 has helped make a difference to the lives of many children and young people throughout Scotland.
From the Smartwheelchair, Digital Assessment Arrangements, the development of Books for All and collaborative work on the Scottish Voices, Paul has pioneered a range of education solutions; with CALL Scotland being one of the very first research units investigating assistive technology for people with disabilities or additional support needs.

Paul also received the Principal's Medal in 2010, for his outstanding contributions, but anyone who has worked with Paul knows that it has always been about people. The Learners, the Parents, the Teachers, the NHS staff, the Suppliers, the Colleagues. Everyone who knows Paul has benefited from his professionalism, his expertise, his knowledge, his empathy, his friendship, his humour and his ability to find a solution, whatever the challenges may be.
Thank you very much for all the time and effort you put into me and my family to achieve so much in my education! It was greatly appreciated! Next year, I'm doing Honours in my degree in Cyber Security." Learner who Paul worked with since Primary 1.

Many Congratulations and thanks from all the team at CALL Scotland for your outstanding legacy and we hope that you continue to enjoy your well deserved retirement, after a lifetime of service to Education in Scotland.
